Today, I am featuring my own story "Takin' Pictures". It is included in the anthology "A Flash of Words."
What was the inspiration for your story? - It was a writing prompt in a group I am in. As soon as I read the prompt, a story of my children’s great-grandparents, Willard and Alice Bradley, came to mind.
Was there a time when writing where you had to sit back stunned at what just happened? If so, what was it? - Yes, in my novella, “The Mirror”. I had no clue about the death until it happened. After I cried, I figured out why it had to happen.
What do you think is the key to writing a compelling flash story? - Try to put in as much emotion into as you can. If you’re writing a sad story, you’d better be crying while you’re writing it.
Do you write every day? - No, but I think about storylines constantly.
Apart from writing, what do you do for fun? - Clean, organize, and play Pokemon Go with my son.
Can you relate to any of the characters in your flash fiction story? - I’m of the “Angels are bowling” league.
Did your story turn out the way you planned, or were there some surprises along the way? - Well, I’m a pantser, so there wasn’t a whole lot of planning. Parts of the story (Stanley’s death & Agnes in the nursing home) were already “written” for me.
How long did it take to write your story? - I think it took me two-three days, maybe.
Do you think writing flash fiction is a challenge with the word restriction? - Yes, and I enjoy the challenge. It has helped me tighten my writing skills.
If you were on death row, what would you want your last meal to be? - A huge bowl of Frosted Flakes with chocolate soy milk.
What is a quote that you find inspirational/motivates you to write? - Too many of today’s children have straight teeth and crooked morals - Anonymous
